Christian Kappe - Marc Brenken Duo
This duo presents musical freshness, beautiful compositions, humor and
energy played by two musicians who like to take risks and who try new
ways.
The idea for this new band came up spontaneously. Christian Kappe about
Marc Brenken: „Marc is an impressive pianist and musician. His approach
to music, his compositions and his creativity inspired me right away”.
Marc
Brenken, born in Wilhelmshaven on June 17th, 1973, grew up in
Schleswig-Holstein. He began to play the piano when he was eight years
old and soon started to improvise. He learned a lot by listening to jazz
records (in the early years Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing,
later Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, John Taylor etc.).
After finishing school he spent two years studying civil engineering in
Karlsruhe, then studied jazz piano at the Folkwang-Musikhochschule in
Essen, where he graduated in 1998.
He did several CD recordings (a.o. Paolo Dinuzzi: "Kleine Big Banda");
In 1999 he wrote parts of the film music of "Sonnenallee" (directed
by Leander Haußmann).
Marc has played in a duet with the Spanish vocalist Minerva Díaz
Pérez since may 2001. One year later in october he formed a trio
under his own name with Sven Otte (b) and Bernd Gremm (dr). He gave
concerts and had engagements in Norway, Spain, Kuwait and The Netherlands.
Marc had lessons with John Taylor and took part in clinics by Richie
Beirach, Fred Hersch and Kenny Werner.

Christian
Kappe who studied in The Netherlands and the USA is a member
of the band of hammond organ player Barbara Dennerlein and teaches at
the conservatory of Leipzig. Next to touring Europe, North -, South -
America and Africa with the Florian Zenker - Christian Kappe 4tet and
the German Jazz Orchestra led by Peter Herbolzheimer, Christian Kappe
established himself on the scene by winning international competitions
(a.o. best soloist at the Int. Jazz competition in Spain '99) and by several
CD – recordings and studio – productions (a.o. Mercedes Benz
World Racing /TDK, Frank Mead (Phil Collins, Eric Clapton)).
Marc Brenken and Christian Kappe about the repertoire: „We like to concentrate on a nicely ballanced and colourful programe to present different moods, styles and grooves. The mixture of own compositions, originals and standards creates a hugh variety and keeps this intimate setting interesting“.
Marc Brenken - Christian Kappe Quartett
As a duo it began – now Christian Kappe (tp) and Marc Brenken (p)
take in two of North Rhine Westphalia's top jazzers for their new quartet:
Alex Morsey, with his phantastic inventiveness, virtuosic technique and
humorous scat solos one of the most sought-after bass players in Germany,
and Marcus Rieck, sensitive and hard swinging drummer with a great wealth
of experience.
In foursome they fathom particularly original compositions ranging from lyrical
ballads over pointed short stories to intoxicating grooves, always putting themselves
on the line and enjoying extensive improvisations. An exciting and varied concert
experience.
Christian Kappe (trumpet, flugelhorn) is a steady member in the band of German
organ queen Barbara Dennerlein and Dutch pianist Jasper van't Hof's formation „Hot
Lips“. After his studies in the Netherlands and at Berklee College in Boston
he won amongst others the prize of the best soloist at the Getxo Jazz Festival
(Spain) in 1999. He also toured with the Florian Zenker – Christian Kappe
quartet and the German Youth Jazz Orchestra in Europe, Africa, North and South
America.
Marc Brenken (piano, composition) is a much in demand pianist in the Ruhr area
and beyond since his studies at the Folkwang Academy of Music. 1999 he was involved
in the score of the successfull movie „Sonnenallee“. Ever since he
has been composing mainly for his own projects.
Alex Morsey (double-bass) likewise studied in Essen and is simply one of the
most adept and inventive jazz musicians on the scene. One who has lived to see
him on stage will not forget his breathtaking solos very soon. Many a time his
fellow musicians can be seen standing alongside marvelling or grinning.
Marcus Rieck (drums) already in his younger years has played with the cream of
the German jazz scene: Silvia Droste, Werner Neumann, Martin Sasse, Matthias
Schubert – to name only a couple. Like only few drummers he contrives to
bring out the best in a band and make it swing.
